Sn4961 Superb quality Victorian Howard and Sons mahogany sideboard, having figured mahogany top above shallow, panelled frieze and a pair of figured mahogany panelled doors, fitted with original working lock and a key and enclosing height adjustable shelf, all flanked by moulded pilasters and bowed open sections with polished shelves, all standing on moulded plinth base. This antique cabinet is stamped Howards & Sons Berners St and it also bears Howard & Sons label. The cabinet is in outstanding original condition, retaining original finish and patina. Established in 1820 by John Howard. Trading at 24 Lemon St, London, as a ‘Cabinet Manufacturer’ . In 1832 they moved to 34 Great Alie St where they would stay, and open an upholstery workshop / showroom. After that, the firm traded from multiple addresses across central London,
The firm is best known for its exceptional quality upholstered furniture, cabinet making and wall and floor coverings.
In 1872 they relocated to their most known address, Berners Street, and flourished. Winning awards at multiple exhibitions including the 1862 International Exhibition and the 1900 Exposition Universelle in PARIS.
Howard and Sons worked for exclusive clients throughout the 19th and early 20th century, and boasted Royal patronage. They have become one of the best known and highly sought after names in Victorian era furniture.
