Sn5011 Exceptional mahogany and brass inlaid wardrobe by Portois & Fix Wien with panelled and string inlaid sides, having outwept cornice above brass inlaid frieze and a single door with original mirror enclosing hanging rail, additional hooks and ties and belts rails fitted with original brass inlaid handle, all flanked by reeded and brass inlaid Corinthian columns with laurel carved bases, all standing on brass string inlaid moulded plinth terminating in original turned feet. This antique wardrobe retains its original finish which has been cleaned, revived and waxed, all in wonderful home ready condition. c1900

Portois & Fix was an important furniture maker and interior designer in Austria- Hungary. The company was founded in 1881 by the Viennese Anton Fix and his colleague August Fix. In 1883 the company was represented at the International Exhibition in Vienna. Orders from Germany, Russia, Turkey, Switzerland, Italy and Egypt followed. The two entrepreneurs opened branches in London, Milan, Paris, Wroclaw, Budapest, Cairo, Karlsbad, Bombay, Bucharest, Constantinople and Turin. Customers were the imperial court, imperial and royal highnesses, nobility, industrialists, the upper middle class and companies.
